Compass Centre: Numeracy

Date: 1st May 2026 @ 2:41pm

This week in Numeracy, we have been busy exploring measurement using both standard and non-standard units in fun, hands-on ways.

Pupils in Class 1 enjoyed drawing around a variety of everyday objects before using a ruler to measure their length in centimetres. They carefully read the numbers on the ruler and then compared their measurements, discussing which objects were longer or shorter and why. This helped to develop both their measuring skills and their mathematical language.

In Class 2, pupils explored distance by rolling a ball across the floor. They then used blocks as a non-standard measurement tool to measure how far the ball had travelled, counting the blocks carefully to find totals up to 15.

Finally, pupils in the common room took part in number songs up to the value of five, including favourites such as Five Speckled Frogs and Five Sausages in a Pan. These songs helped to reinforce early number recognition and counting.
